Governments at every level have taken steps over the last decade to reduce the flow of plastic pollution into the world’s oceans, according to a recently published ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ policy analysis. The analysis finds, however, that the vast majority of new policies have focused specifically on plastic shopping bags.

ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ has received a $20 million gift to strengthen research and education at the Nicholas School of the Environment, aiming to solve the most pressing environmental challenges confronting society, President Vincent E. Price announced today.

On Wednesday, June 10, the Nicholas School will participate in #ShutDownSTEM and #ShutDownAcademia as part of acknowledging why Black lives matter. This action is in recognition that as members of a university community and the work we do as scientists and knowledge creators, either directly or indirectly, is embedded in systems of racial injustice and inequality.

As companies inch closer to mining the ocean’s depths, a growing chorus of scientists and environmental advocates are pushing back, warning that such activity could cause irreversible harm to ecosystems we’ve barely begun to understand.

As dean, I am committed to serious change and will commit our resources, intellect and energy to address these very complex challenges as we seek to advance anti-racism in our curriculum, admissions, recruitment, training among our students, faculty and staff, and hiring.

The state-of-the-art R/V Shearwater made its maiden research voyage on a ten-day trip around South Florida, the Dry Tortugas and Gulf of Mexico.
