Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability
The Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability (NIEES) unites the strengths of the (founded in 2005) and the (founded in 2011). Working closely with ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ schools and other units, the merged institute advances the university’s environmental mission by developing transformative educational experiences, galvanizing and conducting impactful research, and engaging with decision makers at the global, national, state and local levels.
Duke Environmental Law and Policy Clinic
Through the , graduate and law students work in interdisciplinary teams alongside clinic clients to engage in research, analysis, advocacy, and problem-solving on matters of environmental justice, sustainability, and public health, addressing such matters as the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, agriculture, environmental health, and watershed, ocean, and coastal pollution.
Bass Connections
bridges the classroom and the world beyond the university, giving students from all of Duke’s schools a chance to tackle complex societal problems alongside our superb faculty. We support research teams that draw on perspectives and methods from multiple disciplines, as well as robust engagement with communities, stakeholders and decision-makers.
Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Collaboratives
The (IGECs) are led by interdisciplinary teams of faculty from across ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½ who work together to address complex societal challenges, including Climate & Health, Society-Centered AI, and Information Science and Engineering for the Public Sector. IGECs provide a collaborative community where Duke graduate and professional students can engage with faculty and peers across disciplines. ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½s can participate in an IGEC by: (1) completing a graduate certificate; (2) applying for a fellowship; and (3) taking part in open learning activities available to all Duke affiliates.
