Ryan Emanuel has been promoted from associate professor to full professor in the Division of Environmental Social Systems within the Nicholas School of the Environment. Emanuel’s scholarship sits at the intersection of hydrology, climate change, environmental justice and Indigenous studies.

His research explores topics ranging from water movement through ecosystems to the effects of climate change and land use on forests, wetlands and coastal landscapes. He is widely recognized for illuminating how sea level rise drives tree die-off and the formation of ghost forests along the Southeastern coast.

“Equally notable is Ryan’s nationally recognized leadership in Indigenous environmental justice, informed both by his scientific expertise and his engagement with Tribal communities,” said Lori Bennear, Stanback Dean of the Nicholas School. His recent book, On the Swamp: Fighting for Indigenous Environmental Justice, is a touchstone for understanding how environmental change intersects with history, policy and culture in Indigenous homelands, she noted.

Emanuel’s work “exemplifies what it means to be a publicly engaged scholar whose science not only advances knowledge but also strengthens communities. His promotion reflects both his exceptional academic achievements and the profound impact of his research, teaching and service,” Bennear said.

Emanuel is also co-chair of community engagement and environmental justice at the Nicholas School.
