Two students with ties to the Nicholas School of the Environment have each won a Rhodes scholarship, one of the world鈥檚 most prestigious academic awards. The students are also part of the , a joint initiative between Duke and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

, who is majoring in geological sciences at UNC, is a Climate Scholar at the Nicholas School, where she conducts research in  on approaches to tracking fertilizer contamination. 

 is majoring in geography at UNC and in environmental sciences and policy at the Nicholas School, where her advisor is . For her honors thesis, she is working with  to examine Indigenous sovereignty and energy governance among oil- and gas-producing nations in the United States.
