What factors were most important in your decision to choose the Nicholas School for your graduate studies? And, how will your time at the Nicholas School help you reach your career aspirations?
My admission to the Nicholas School, and subsequent recognition as a Nicholas Scholar, came at a time when I was at a crossroads in my career. I had built up a few years of professional experience through seasonal positions, and felt like if I wanted to take the next step, I needed to go back to school. However, the high cost of grad school and the current state of job competition in the environmental field was daunting- I wasn鈥檛 sure if I鈥檇 be able to make it work. Being chosen as a Nicholas Scholar dispelled those fears. Not only did it remove much of the financial burden, but the recognition restored my confidence that I am on the right path in my career. This made it an easy decision to pick Nic.
Even before being selected as a Nicholas Scholar, I wasn鈥檛 considering any other programs for my graduate education- it was Duke or bust. I felt that the unique cross-disciplinary nature of the MEM degree was perfect for what I was looking for, and I was impressed with the extensive and connected alumni network that Duke boasts. Beyond that, I was (and still am) extraordinarily excited to study at the Marine Lab my second year. As someone who鈥檚 always been passionate about marine and coastal ecosystems, it felt like the perfect opportunity to gain hands-on experience and pursue my dreams. My goal is to become a leader in coastal restoration efforts, and the Nicholas School will provide me with the tools and opportunities to make that dream a reality.
