What factors were most important in your decision to choose the Nicholas School for your graduate studies? And, how will your time at the Nicholas School help you reach your career aspirations?
The generous support and recognition I received as a Nicholas Scholar was one of the driving reasons I decided to pursue graduate education at Duke. Despite being a leader in the field of environmental management, the financial support I received made Duke my most competitive offer and gave me the confidence to move across the country to pursue graduate education. Along with financial support, receiving this recognition was deeply gratifying and affirmed that my past experiences were valued by the Nicholas School community. I am extremely grateful for that confidence, and it will serve as a continual source of motivation as I begin this next stage of my career.
Beyond this recognition, several factors made the Nicholas School particularly stand out. The exceptional faculty, strong professional network, and emphasis on experiential learning convinced me the Nicholas School and broader Duke community were the right environment for me to achieve my career goals. As an admitted student, Campus Visit Day highlighted the genuine collaborative community that defines the program and convinced me I could build meaningful relationships that flourish long after graduation. Especially as someone concentrating in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Health (EEH), I was drawn to the small cohort size and opportunity to work closely with both my peers and faculty.
Additionally, I was drawn to the Nicholas School鈥檚 unique interdisciplinary curriculum and modern approach to problem solving. Today鈥檚 environmental challenges rarely fit within a single discipline, and I believe Duke is at the forefront of developing holistic, well-rounded environmental managers. The curriculum鈥檚 ability to pair management training with environmental coursework will equip me with the skills necessary to begin tackling these complex challenges.
Coming straight from undergraduate studies, my time at the Nicholas School will provide invaluable professional experience opportunities and the ability to learn from excellent peers and leading experts. Although my current interests lie in regenerative agriculture and shifting food production away from industrial inputs, I am excited to see how the Nicholas School will refine the direction of my career. While my interests may evolve, I am committed to advancing solutions that recognize healthy, nutritious food can be produced without sacrificing environmental health and economic viability. I am confident that the knowledge, experiences, and network the Nicholas School provides can help turn this vision into reality.
