What factors were most important in your decision to choose the Nicholas School for your graduate studies? And, how will your time at the Nicholas School help you reach your career aspirations?

My choice to pursue a degree at the Nicholas School began with a realization that the mission and culture of the place where I focused my professional time and effort truly mattered to me. For me, there was no question that Duke's programmatic intentionality was unique and set it apart. Its commitment to its students through equal parts structure and resources to pursue our own interests makes its mission and priorities clear and something of which I am proud to be a part. Being recognized as a Nicholas Scholar is not only an incredible financial contribution and investment in my education, but made me feel from the beginning that I was headed to a place that valued me for my participation in a community as much as I valued it. In addition, I feel incredibly lucky to be in close proximity to such passionate and intelligent peers with their own environmental experiences and career paths within the Scholar program. The people I have the opportunity to interact with are equally important to me as the degrees I will come away with.

I hope to pursue a career in meaningful natural carbon capture implementation and solutions, and feel uniquely poised to do so by combining my concentrations in terrestrial and freshwater environments and environmental analytics and modeling, coupled with a master's in forestry and resource management. The chance to immerse myself in classes, research, and career opportunities provided by this program is incredible, and to do so fully, thanks to the contributions of the Nicholas Scholar program, is deeply meaningful to me. I plan to build meaningful technical depth and knowledge in these converging fields and actualize the image I have had for my career. The added chance to collaborate with peers across disciplines and focuses is also a skill that I will take with me and know will be essential to my career success. At the end of the day, these relationships with faculty, alumni, and peers will be both my most memorable and valuable takeaways.

I am excited by the opportunities and endlessly grateful for the Nicholas Scholar program and for the chance to learn from all those who have been recognized alongside and before me.
