I am interested in global (large scale, macro) questions of conservation, disease and economics. I received a B.A. in Philosophy and a B.A. in Psychology from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and D. Phil. in Biological Science from the University of Sussex, England.  Following graduate studies, I was a Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellow and Smithson Fellow at the National Zoo working on the behavior and reproduction of pandas.  I’ve edited 5 books, including Foundations of Macroecology, published by University of Chicago Press, and authored over 190 scientific papers in a variety of publications (cited 55,732 times with an h-index of 84), including 35 in high profile journals Nature, Science, and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. I am a Scientific Fellow of The Zoological Society of London, served as an elected member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and elected member of the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education, the accrediting body for professional veterinary schools.  I was founding Dean of the Odum School of Ecology (2007-2021), University of Georgia, the first stand-alone college in the world devoted to the science of ecology, and presently UGA Foundation Professor of Ecology, Emeritus, and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Biodiversity and Disease Ecology, Nicholas School, at ÌÇÐÄ´«Ã½.
